What to Wear as a Wedding Guest in Seville: The Honest Guide

You have been invited to a wedding in Seville. The invitation says etiqueta or etiqueta rigurosa and you are not entirely sure what that means for a man, especially if you are flying in from abroad. This guide covers what Spanish wedding dress codes actually mean and what options you have for hiring something appropriate in Seville.

What the Dress Codes Mean

• Etiqueta rigurosa: Morning suit (chaqué) for daytime, tuxedo for evening. This is the strictest code and it means exactly what it says — a dark lounge suit is not appropriate here.
• Etiqueta: Morning suit or a very well-cut dark suit for daytime; tuxedo or dark suit for evening. There is slightly more flexibility, but the expectation is still formal.
• Semi-formal or no dress code stated: A well-cut suit in navy, grey or dark green is perfectly appropriate.

The Timing Matters

Seville weddings almost always happen at one of two times: morning (11:00–13:00) or evening (19:00–21:00). Summer ceremonies in July and August are almost exclusively evening. A morning ceremony calls for a morning suit; an evening ceremony after 19:00 calls for a tuxedo or, at minimum, a dark suit.

Hiring in Seville as a Guest

What Accessories Do You Need?

For a morning suit: white shirt with a stiff collar, cravat or formal tie, waistcoat matching the trousers, and Oxford shoes in black or dark brown. For a tuxedo: dress shirt with either a pleated front or plain bib, black bow tie (self-tied is the correct choice), cummerbund or waistcoat in matching silk, and patent leather or polished Oxford shoes.
