The Rule of Thumb

In Spain, the general rule is simple: morning suit (chaqué) for ceremonies before 19:00, tuxedo (esmoquin) for ceremonies at or after 19:00. In Seville, where summer heat pushes many weddings into the evening, tuxedos are increasingly common — especially in July and August when a 20:00 ceremony is the norm.

Black or Midnight Blue?

Midnight blue (azul noche) has overtaken black as the preferred tuxedo colour for weddings in Seville. It photographs better in the golden Andalusian light, it looks intentional rather than formal-by-default, and it pairs well with the warm tones of hacienda and cortijo settings. Black remains correct and is never wrong — it is simply less interesting.

Lapel: Shawl or Peak?

Both work for a wedding. The shawl collar reads as slightly softer and more relaxed; the peak lapel is sharper and more traditional. For Seville weddings in formal urban venues (Alfonso XIII, Alcázar, Atarazanas), the peak lapel is more appropriate. For outdoor hacienda receptions, either works well.
